Chopr - A New Top-down Survival Action.
Working Title: Chopr
Genre: Action Survival
Concept: The end of the world has brought about a new age of survival. Guide an unnamed individual with nothing but an axe to fight off waves of enemies and monsters, building a shelter and crafting new weapons along the way to prolong their life and avoid their inevitable fate. The player can hunker down to survive as long as possible or go on the offensive, exploring the randomly generated world to find rare resources – and terrifying bosses.
Concept Creation: Chopr takes influence from various sources – most prominently, Don’t Starve and The Forest. It uses a similar aesthetic to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. The gameplay is a mashup of other action roguelikes, like Cult of the Lamb and The Binding of Isaac. The art is illustrated in a pixel-art style, taking cues, such as the colour scheme, from S.T.A.L.K.E.R., applied to a charming and simplistic style such as Baba is You (of which I’m a big fan). This hopefully creates a timeless art style, allowing the game to be appreciated regardless of its graphical prowess.
Audience: Small roguelike indies are especially popular at the moment. With AAA games faltering in popularity, the aesthetic of Chopr specifically leans into those indie styles. The game is intended to be casual, but challenging. The difficulty model is similar to games like Dark Souls – where the overall difficulty is decided less by arbitrary numbers and more by individual and unique challenges. This hardcore kind of game can be divisive, but there is a strong cult following behind this maxim. Furthermore, with games like Elden Ring, this gameplay model is becoming increasingly popular and mainstream.
The player may face ‘Hound’ and ‘Bandit,’ two enemies.
